Respiratory System and Ventilation

The ventilation system of a home is like the respiratory system of a human body. Maintaining clean airflow in your home can significantly reduce the risk of health conditions like asthma or respiratory infections.

Musculoskeletal System and Structure

The structural parts of a home, such as stairs and floors, are akin to the human musculoskeletal system. Proper maintenance can prevent trips and falls, protecting you from injuries.

Cardiovascular System and Plumbing

Your body depends on the quality of blood circulating in your vessels, just as your home depends clean water pumping through your pipes. The cardiovascular system is like the plumbing of your home:poor plumbing can lead to high water bills, severe leaks, and possibly debilitating dehydration. These plumbing issues are disruptive to affordable housing, much like blood clots from high cholesterol or blood pressure issues can lead to strokes and heart attacks to disrupt your health. Being mindful of water quality is crucial for maintaining a safe and affordable home.

Affordable Housing Definition

Affordable housing means that you spend no more than 30% of your total household income on housing costs, which typically include your rent or mortgage payments along with utilities. When housing costs exceed this 30% threshold, it can strain your budget, making it difficult to afford other necessities such as food, healthcare, and education. Living in unaffordable housing can lead to emotional distress, health problems, and even the risk of eviction.

Example:

If your rent is $1,500 and your utilities are $400, your total monthly housing costs are $1,900. To determine if this is affordable, divide your total housing costs by 0.30. In this case, your household income should be at least $6,333 per month ($6,333 x 0.30 = $1,900). If your income is lower, such as $5,000 per month, your housing costs would be 38% of your income, making your housing unaffordable.
